XCMG Excavator Gear Pump Guide

This guide teaches you to identify & order XCMG excavator pilot gear pumps. Same models use different pumps; check flange, shaft, rotation and serial number to avoid mismatched, damaged parts.

Two XCMG XE215s can roll off the line the same year and still need a completely different pilot gear pump. Before you order a replacement, you have to answer two questions: which pump actually drives your controls, and which way it turns. Get either wrong and you’ve just paid freight on a pump that won’t fit — or worse, one that tears itself apart in the first hour.

Gear pump vs. main piston pump: what actually moves your XCMG

On an XCMG excavator the big hydraulic muscle comes from the main variable-displacement piston pumps — they push the boom, arm, bucket, swing, and travel. The gear pump you’re ordering here is almost always the pilot pump: a small, fixed-displacement pump that feeds low-pressure oil (roughly 3–4 MPa) to the pilot circuit so the control valves actually shift when the operator moves a lever. Some XCMG builds also use a gear pump as a charge / auxiliary pump for the fan drive or a secondary function.

If your joystick feels dead, your controls lag, or the whole machine “won’t listen,” nine times out of ten the piston pumps are fine and the little gear pump is the culprit.

Why the same XCMG model can need a different gear pump

XCMG tunes the pilot circuit to the machine’s build. A base XE215 with a mechanical control pattern runs a different pilot pump than an XE215 with the upgraded hydraulic cab and pilot-saving logic. Same paint, same badge, different pump — and the parts catalogs don’t cross over.

XE215 — pilot pump by build

A standard XE215 runs a through-shaft pilot gear pump off the main pump group; an XE215 with the high-flow auxiliary package carries a larger-displacement pilot/charge pump mounted separately. The flanges look nearly identical. Order by model number alone and you’ll likely get the wrong shaft.

Every gear pump is defined by four things. Read all four off the machine before you quote a number.

E55 / XE60 (mini)

Compact units usually hang the pilot gear pump directly off the main piston pump shaft. Displacement is small; the killer here is the rotation direction — mini excavators are frequently repowered or pump-swapped, and a reversed pump fails fast.

XE135 / XE155 (small)

Through-shaft pilot pumps dominate. The nameplate lists displacement and rotation; photograph it before removal.

XE205 / XE215 (medium)

This is where the two-build problem bites. Standard vs. high-flow auxiliary changes the pump. Always read the tag, never trust the model plate alone.

XE305 / XE370 (large)

Larger machines often split the pilot and charge duties. The gear pump you need may be the charge pump feeding the fan, not the pilot pump — identify by port location and pressure rating.

XE490 / XE700 (extra-large)

Dedicated pump groups with their own flanges and splines. These are the easiest to mis-order because the numbers look similar across tiers. Serial-number confirmation is mandatory.

Step-by-step: identifying the gear pump on your machine

  1. Locate the pump. On most XCMG excavators the pilot gear pump is on the main pump group at the engine side — smaller than the piston pumps, no big hose banks, often a single small inlet/outlet pair.
  2. Read the nameplate. Displacement (cc/rev), rated pressure, rotation arrow, and a part/model number are stamped on the housing.
  3. Confirm the mounting flange. Measure the bolt circle and SAE flange size; match it to the pump group.
  4. Count the shaft splines. Note splined vs. keyed and the shaft diameter — this is what couples to the drive.
  5. Check the rotation arrow. The cast arrow on the housing must match the drive direction. This is the #1 cause of instant failure.
  6. Measure the ports. Inlet/outlet thread type (Metric/BSP/UNF) and diameter decide your fittings.
  7. Cross-check the serial number. Open the XCMG build sheet for your machine’s serial and confirm the pump part number before you buy.

What if the pump is buried inside the main pump group?

On through-shaft builds the gear pump sits behind the piston pump and you can’t read the tag without pulling the group. In that case, remove the pump, set it on the bench, and read the nameplate in hand — then order the exact displacement and rotation. Don’t guess from the model number.

The core order. Everything else keys off its displacement, flange, and rotation.

Shaft seal and coupling

A worn seal is the most common “the pump leaks but isn’t dead yet” symptom. Match the shaft diameter and spline exactly.

Mounting flange / adapter

Wrong flange = pump won’t seat. Measure the bolt circle, don’t eyeball it.

Relief valve (if fitted)

Some pilot pumps carry an integral relief. Reusing a dead one on a new pump drops pressure and your controls stay sluggish.

Inlet / outlet fittings

Metric vs. BSP vs. UNF trips up more orders than people admit. Confirm thread with a gauge, not a guess.

Common mistakes that cost time and money

⚠️ Rotation direction is not optional. A gear pump spun the wrong way cavitates and scores the gears within minutes. The arrow on the housing must match the drive. “Close enough” is not close enough.

⚠️ Model number alone is not the spec. Two XE215s with different builds take different pilot pumps. Read the nameplate and serial, or you’ll eat the return freight.

⚠️ Don’t reuse the old relief valve blindly. If your pump carried an integral relief, a stuck one on a fresh pump keeps pressure low and your excavator “won’t listen.” Fit a verified valve.

⚠️ Thread mismatch kills the install. Metric, BSP, and UNF fittings look alike in a photo. Gauge the port before you cut hose.
